HiMama is improving learning outcomes for children zero to five. We support early childhood education because the sector is the most challenging teaching environment. Low wages, lack of professional development and long days; HiMama’s aim is to ease childcare management and support early childhood professionals.
The HiMama team firmly believes that early childhood professionals deserve to be celebrated and that recognition is important. Our Educator Spotlight is one way we are shining a light on the important and undervalued work of childcare professionals.
The reason I decided to work in early childhood education was the joy of working with children. I like to use my imagination, and of course, no one uses their imagination like children. Children are so honest. It is interesting to always hear their perspective on different situations.
CHALLENGES IN EARLY EDUCATION
Mona reflected on three challenges she faces in early learning environments:
- Preparation: “My education and experience focused on working with children aged 0-6. When I started the profession as a supply I still felt very under-prepared. I think the profession should have educational training for children 6-12 years of age too.”
- Communication: “On many occasions, it was difficult to maintain conversations with parents because of a lack of consistency. After working in the field for years, it is still a challenge. It would be great if all early year centers had a consistent way to maintain communication between parents but also staff members.”
- Respect: “Another challenge would be the lack of respect the profession receives. This is saddening because early childhood education is not as highly respected as it should be. These are the most important years of life and there should be a bigger investment in early childhood. ”
“What brings joy to my work would be seeing children grow and tell their own stories to their parents. I enjoy watching the children take interest in the outdoor environment because that is something we need more of.”
“Parent communication is important because having a strong rapport with parents means that educators and parents can work together to help the child grow in healthy ways.”
MONA’S CAREER GOALS
“After receiving my diploma and working in the field, I decided to obtain a degree in early childhood leadership while still being involved in the profession. After completing my degree I plan to get involved with working with first time single mothers. I’d like to help advocate for their children.
“Overall my experience in early childhood education has been and continues to be rewarding. I hope organizations follows HiMama’s lead in advocating and empowering educators!”.
